How to Exfoliate Depending on Your Skin Type

How to Exfoliate Depending on Your Skin Type

No matter how young or old you are, every person has dead skin cells – we are not exceptions!

In fact, the top 18 to 23 layers of our skin are composed of dead cells. To give you the numbers, new skin cells replace the old ones every month. Meanwhile, the body expels 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells everyday. It’s only at the bottom layer of your skin, the epidermis, where new skin cells grow.

The good news is dead skin cells can be removed from the skin through one solution –  exfoliation. Still, different types of exfoliation are necessary to avoid irritation and increased pore obstruction.

How Do You Exfoliate?

Exfoliation is the technique for cleaning your skin's surface of dead skin cells. There are two types of exfoliation – chemical and mechanical exfoliation.

With mechanical exfoliation, it removes dead skin cells from the skin with a brush, sponge, or scrub. Meanwhile, chemical exfoliation dissolves dead skin cells gently using chemicals like alpha and beta hydroxy acids. If you’re not sure what to do, your dermatologist may help identify which is appropriate for you.

Types of Skin and Exfoliation

Now, let’s discuss the types of skin and the suitable exfoliation technique. If you’re wondering why this is impotant, this procedure may prevent redness, dryness, and irritation of your skin. Skin types come in five varieties: combination, dry, oily, normal, and sensitive. Let’s dive in!

Normal Skin

The process of exfoliating skin with normal skin type is simpler, and it can be done mechanically or with chemicals. Normal skin types are said to have balanced skin that is free of impaired skin barriers and a low risk of product sensitivity.

Dry Skin

Next, dry skin. Age, the environment, genetics, and other factors can all contribute to dry skin. Tightness, roughness, itching, peeling, and redness are common signs of dry skin, especially visible during extreme hot and cold seasons.. This sort of skin should be carefully exfoliated, especially during winters.

Our advice is to use gentle treatments to prevent worsened symptoms, increased dryness, or skin irritation. Those with dry skin should also exfoliate with a washcloth and a mild chemical exfoliant.

Oily Skin

People with oily skin produce excessive sebum on their faces, which is an essential component of skin care for oily skin types is exfoliation. Exfoliation not only removes dead skin cells but also helps shield the skin from spots and pimples. Breakouts are frequently the result of dead skin cells clogging pores due to oily skin, so this skin type can benefit from stronger chemical exfoliants or mechanical exfoliation.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin types are more likely to experience irritation or allergic reactions to substances or scents. Sensitive skin types typically suffer tightness, dryness, burning, and itching.

Those with delicate skin may find mechanical exfoliation to be very harsh. They should use a washcloth and a gentle chemical exfoliant, as advised. For moderate exfoliation and minimal ingredient products, mandelic acid may be an option to prevent sensitivity and unfavourable reactions.

Combination Skin

The term "combination skin" describes skin that is sensitive or dry in certain areas and oily in others.

Salicylic acid can be used to treat mixed skin if oil is the primary issue. Choose lactic acid if your primary concern is sensitive skin.

Exfoliate, and Experience a brighter and healthier glow

Exfoliating helps to maintain your skin's healthy radiance and smooth, silky texture as you age by breaking up pigmented cells and removing dry skin buildup. With a consistent exfoliation and moisturising regimen, you will see your skin changing from drab and dry to smooth and bright.
